Panic gripped parts of Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Saturday night after sporadic gunshots were heard around the Olaiya area as results from the governorship election continued to be uploaded.

Residents reportedly scampered to safety as the sound of gunfire heightened tension in the area.

The incident occurred several hours after voting ended across the state, with polling-unit results still being uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal as the collation process continued.

The cause of the gunshots was not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.

The development heightened tension in the state as political parties and their supporters awaited the completion of the collation process and the declaration of the final results.
