Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a 49-year-old man suspected of armed robbery and recovered a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him during an intelligence-led operation.

The suspect, identified as Chima Ogumba, was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on the morning of Monday, August 17, 2026, along Nkpor Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to Ikenga, the operatives moved into the identified area following intelligence and conducted a search that led to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition.

The police said Ogumba was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for his possession of the weapon and ammunition.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the suspect be subjected to a thorough investigation to determine his possible involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities.

The investigation will also establish the source of the recovered firearm and ammunition and their intended use.

The police said the operation formed part of the command’s broader intelligence-led strategy to identify and disrupt criminal activities across the state.

CP Oji Ama, according to the statement signed by Ikenga, reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations, proactive policing, targeted patrols and sustained tactical interventions aimed at identifying, disrupting and dismantling criminal networks in Anambra.

The command assured residents that its security operations would continue, while urging members of the public to provide useful and timely information to the police to support ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.
