The Anambra State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident at the Onitsha Head Bridge, assuring victims of medical support and calling for calm.

The incident occurred during an alleged confrontation between police operatives and suspects resisting arrest, which reportedly resulted in gunshot injuries.

Addressing a crowd in Onitsha on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, said the immediate priority of the Command was the recovery of those injured in the incident.

The Commissioner subsequently visited the victims at the hospital, where he assured them of the Command’s support and pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses were covered.

CP Oji Ama also ordered a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident, particularly the circumstances that led to the discharge of the firearm.

He stressed that the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the confrontation and determine the appropriate action based on its findings.

According to him, the Command would ensure that the matter was handled professionally and transparently.

The Commissioner appealed to members of the public to remain calm and peaceful while the investigation proceeds, reiterating the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the situation around the Onitsha Head Bridge area has been brought under control, with the Command reporting that vehicular and human movement has returned to normal.
