Anambra State Police Command has reported another breakthrough in its intensified intelligence-led operations against kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes, with two suspected members of a criminal gang killed during a gun battle along Eziowelle Road.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19, 2026, after operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acted on credible intelligence that suspected kidnappers and armed robbers were operating in the area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives swiftly mobilised to the location, where the suspects opened fire on the police team, triggering a gun duel.
Ikenga said two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the encounter, while other members of the gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
He said the operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing four live rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun and five live cartridges from the scene.
The police spokesperson said the latest operation underscored the Command’s renewed resolve to disrupt criminal networks through intelligence gathering, proactive policing and targeted tactical operations.
The Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said it had commenced further investigations into the incident while intensified efforts were underway to track down the fleeing suspects.
Ikenga said the Command remained committed to dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding residents across Anambra State.
“The Anambra State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, remains resolute in its determination to sustain intelligence-led and proactive operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety and security of residents across the State,” Ikenga said.
He added that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
