The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and issued on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that building a peaceful country remains a collective responsibility.
He called on citizens to celebrate responsibly and with mutual respect while wishing the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that peace and security are sustained across the country.
The declaration brings the number of public holidays observed by the country to mark major Islamic and Christian religious occasions, in line with the Federal Government’s established practice.
