The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council, has distanced itself from the activities of a group operating under the name Association of Imo State-Based Journalists (AIBJ), declaring that the organisation is neither recognised nor affiliated with the union.
The Chairman of the NUJ Imo State Council, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, JP, made the position known in a press statement issued on Sunday, August 30, 2026, following what he described as activities by persons parading themselves as members or representatives of the group.
Nwanguma said the NUJ had no formal relationship with AIBJ and urged members of the public to disregard any claims by the organisation or its representatives suggesting that it enjoys recognition or affiliation with the NUJ Imo State Council.
“For the avoidance of doubt, recognised affiliates and professional bodies within the NUJ structure include the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), and Correspondents’ Chapel, among others recognised in accordance with the Union’s established structure,” he stated.
The NUJ chairman consequently warned that the Imo State Council would not accept responsibility for any transaction, representation, financial dealings, loss or other consequences arising from dealings with AIBJ or persons purporting to represent the organisation.
He also directed all registered and practising NUJ members in Imo State to disassociate themselves from the activities of the group.
“Any member found to be acting in violation of this directive may face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the Constitution and regulations of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,” Nwanguma warned.
The council further urged members of the public to exercise caution when dealing with individuals or organisations claiming to represent the NUJ through AIBJ.
The union maintained that the disclaimer was issued to protect the public and its members from possible misrepresentation, unauthorised transactions and activities carried out under the impression that AIBJ is affiliated with the NUJ.
Nwanguma stressed that the statement should be regarded as a formal disclaimer to the general public and a caveat to all members of the NUJ Imo State Council.
The NUJ Imo State Council therefore reiterated that AIBJ is not recognised, registered or affiliated with the union and urged the public to disregard any contrary claim.
