The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Chief Kingsley Nweke, has vowed to restore what he described as the lost glory of the senatorial district, promising to prioritise youth empowerment, political education, agriculture, sports, technology and innovation if elected in 2027.
Nweke, popularly known as Odaopuo, made the declaration on Monday, August 31, 2026, at a press conference organised by the Odaopou Campaign Organisation at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Enugu.
The PDP candidate said the 2027 election presented an opportunity for residents of Enugu East to correct past mistakes and reverse what he described as years of decline in the district.
“The time is now to correct the mistakes that have been made in the past. A lot of things have gone wrong in Enugu East Senatorial District, and I’ve come to recover the lost days and regain its lost glory,” Nweke said.
He said his campaign would go beyond making promises, stressing that he would focus on empowering residents with political knowledge and helping them understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
Nweke said such political awareness would enable the people to demand accountability from their representatives and make informed choices during elections.
“That is why I’ve decided that, even if there’s nothing else I do, I’ll lay the foundation for the people to rise again by making sure they know their political rights and become politically aware,” he said.
“When that happens, they can ask questions, know what is right for them, and when good people come, they should be able to select the good eggs and throw away the bad ones.”
The senatorial candidate called for greater unity among youths, women, men and other residents of the district, urging them to collectively take ownership of the political process.
He said this vision informed his campaign mantra, “Anyị Ejebego”, which he translated as “we’re going,” contrasting it with the commonly used “e jebego,” meaning “you’re going.”
“This is the time for everyone in the district—the youth, the mother, the father, the residents and the citizens—to go together. That’s why we came up with the mantra, Anyị Ejebego (we’re going), instead of the usual e jebego (you’re going),” Nweke said.
According to him, the people of Enugu East had an opportunity to unite behind a candidate they believed could effectively represent their interests at the National Assembly.
“The people of Enugu East Senatorial District have decided to come together and produce the person who will represent them. As they say, two good heads are better than one,” he said.
Nweke added: “For that purpose, we are all going to join hands together to save the people of Enugu East Senatorial District and bring back hope to our people.”
The PDP candidate also urged youths and other residents of the district to actively participate in the 2027 elections and defend their political choices through lawful and democratic means.
He said the people should be prepared to stand by candidates they genuinely believed would represent their interests and deliver meaningful development.
“There’s a lot that has been happening, but this is going to be different. Come 2027, I am pleading with the youth and the people of Enugu East Senatorial District to stand their ground and defend their beliefs, their land and the people they believe will represent them and give them what they want,” Nweke said.
He pledged that, if elected, he would remain focused on the interests of the people and would not compromise their mandate.
“We are going to defend the youth, do the right thing and we will not sell our conscience. We will make sure that the people of Enugu East get the best from their lawmaker,” he said.
On his legislative priorities, Nweke said youth empowerment and engagement would occupy a central position in his agenda, alongside initiatives focused on agriculture, sports, partnerships, technology and innovation.
“What I intend to do is focus more on youth empowerment and engagement. If elected, it should be about the district—agriculture, sports, partnership, technology and innovation,” he said.
