The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Abdulrahman Muhammed, has declared that the party’s best days are still ahead, urging its leaders and members to unite, reconcile and reposition the party ahead of future political contests.
Muhammed made the declaration in a goodwill message issued on Monday, August 31, 2026, to mark the PDP’s 28th anniversary, as the opposition party reflected on its journey since its formation in 1998.
The chairman said the PDP emerged on August 31, 1998, at a defining period in Nigeria’s history, with a mission centred on democracy, national unity, stability and development.
According to him, the party’s victory in the 1999 general elections and its subsequent years of leadership at the federal, state and local government levels established the PDP as a major force in Nigeria’s democratic development.
“Our dear party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founded on 31st of August 1998, emerged at a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, carrying the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians for democracy, unity, stability and development,” Muhammed said.
He added: “From our historic victory in the 1999 general elections, through years of providing leadership at the federal, state and local levels, our Party has remained a major pillar of Nigeria’s democratic journey.”
Reflecting on the party’s 28-year history, the PDP chairman acknowledged that the party had experienced both triumphs and setbacks, including periods that tested its unity and resilience.
“Our journey has not been without challenges. We have experienced victories and setbacks, moments of strength and periods that tested our unity. Yet, through it all, the PDP has endured because of the commitment, sacrifice and resilience of millions of faithfuls across Nigeria,” he said.
Muhammed said the anniversary should provide an opportunity for the party to draw lessons from its history while renewing its commitment to the principles upon which it was founded.
“As we mark 28 years, we must draw strength from our history, learn from our experiences and renew our commitment to the ideals that brought us together. Our best days are not behind us; they are ahead of us,” he declared.
He said rebuilding the party would require greater unity, reconciliation, discipline and inclusion, as well as a renewed effort to reconnect with Nigerians.
“The road forward requires unity, reconciliation, discipline, inclusion and a renewed connection with the Nigerian people. Together, we shall rebuild, reposition and strengthen our Party as a credible platform for good governance, social justice, economic opportunity and a better Nigeria,” Muhammed said.
The PDP chairman also appealed to party leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters to remain committed to the party, stressing that its future depended on their collective efforts.
“I therefore call on every leader, stakeholder, member and supporter to remain steadfast and hopeful. The PDP belongs to all of us, and its future is in our collective hands,” he said.
Muhammed, who spoke on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC), expressed appreciation to members for their loyalty, sacrifices and continued commitment to the party.
“On behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC), I thank you for your loyalty, sacrifice and unwavering faith in our great Party,” he said.
He concluded his anniversary message by celebrating the party’s 28 years of existence and reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development.
“Happy 28th Anniversary to the Peoples Democratic Party.
“Long live the PDP!
“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!” he said.
