Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has celebrated elder statesman and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Ike Nwachukwu, CFR, on his 86th birthday, describing him as an illustrious son of the state and one of Nigeria’s finest patriots.
Governor Otti conveyed his felicitations in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, on behalf of the Abia State Government and its people.
The governor described Nwachukwu as a distinguished soldier, diplomat and former senator who represented Abia North, noting his contributions to the country in various capacities, including as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Employment, Labour and Productivity.
According to Otti, Nwachukwu served Nigeria with distinction and projected the country’s image internationally with “dignity, courage and intellect.”
The governor said the elder statesman’s contributions during critical periods in Nigeria’s history helped strengthen national institutions and deepen democratic values.
“To Abia State, General Nwachukwu is more than a statesman. He is a pride of our land, a beacon of service, and a shining example of what it means to live a life devoted to duty, honour and community,” Otti said.
He added that Nwachukwu’s counsel had remained valuable, while his commitment to the unity, peace and progress of Abia State and Nigeria had remained unwavering.
Otti noted that, at 86, the retired general continued to exemplify discipline, wisdom, patriotism and selfless service.
He also acknowledged Nwachukwu’s role in mentoring successive generations of leaders, describing his life of public service as an inspiration to young people in Abia seeking to serve with integrity.
“His counsel has remained invaluable, and his commitment to the unity, peace and progress of Abia and Nigeria has never wavered,” the governor said.
While congratulating Nwachukwu on the milestone, Otti prayed for continued good health, strength and many more years of impactful service.
“As you mark this milestone, we pray that the Almighty God will continue to grant you sound health, strength, and many more years of impactful life. Abia and Nigeria are proud of you, and we celebrate your legacies of service to our Nation and State,” he said.
The governor wished the former minister a joyful and fulfilling 86th birthday, adding, “Happy 86th birthday, General. May your new age be filled with grace, joy, and fulfilment.”
