A fire outbreak has destroyed a duplex and a shuttle bus at Mopol Base Junction, along the Old Amansea-Awka Road in Anambra State, with property estimated at several millions of naira reportedly lost.
The Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, September 6, 2026, saying firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to adjoining properties.
The fire reportedly started in one of the apartments at about 6pm on Saturday before spreading rapidly to other parts of the building and eventually engulfing the shuttle bus parked within the compound.
Chiketa said the emergency call was received at about 1830 hours on Saturday, September 5, prompting the immediate mobilisation of firefighters and equipment to the scene.
He said, “The Anambra State Fire Service has successfully contained a fire outbreak at Mopol Base Junction, along Old Amansea-Awka Road, Anambra State.
“The emergency call was received at about 1830 hours of Saturday, September 5, 2026, reporting a fire outbreak at the location.
“Immediately, the Fire Service swiftly mobilised its personnel and fire-fighting equipment to the scene.
“On arrival, the firefighters commenced aggressive containment and extinguishing operations to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to adjoining properties.
“The fire involved a duplex building containing a boys’ quarters apartment, with a shuttle bus parked within the compound.”
According to the fire service spokesperson, the timely intervention of the firefighters ensured that the blaze was eventually contained and extinguished before it could spread to neighbouring properties.
No death was recorded in the incident, although the fire caused extensive damage to the building, household furniture and the vehicle.
The cause of the fire was reportedly linked to a power surge, triggering panic in the area as residents attempted to salvage valuables from the burning property.
The incident has once again underscored the need for residents to exercise caution with electrical installations and promptly report fire emergencies to enable firefighters to respond before flames spread beyond the point of origin.
