The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has commenced the implementation of its South East Agro-Development Programme with the flag-off of a 200-hectare integrated model farm at Nomeh Unateze in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The project, flagged off on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, is designed as a regional agricultural development intervention aimed at boosting food production, creating jobs and strengthening agricultural value chains across the South East.
Rather than focusing solely on crop production, the integrated facility will combine dairy farming, poultry, fisheries, fodder production, mechanisation, agricultural processing and hands-on training in modern farming practices.
The initiative will also incorporate an out-grower programme through which smallholder farmers in surrounding communities will be linked to agricultural inputs, technical assistance and established markets.
According to the SEDC, the Nomeh project is intended to serve as a pilot for similar agricultural interventions that could subsequently be replicated across the five states of the South East.
The commission said the model was designed to increase productive capacity while providing opportunities for farmers, young people and other participants to engage in modern and commercially viable agriculture.
The project is also aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on food security, increased agricultural productivity, mechanisation, value addition and employment generation.
Through the integrated approach, the SEDC said it seeks to move agricultural production beyond primary farming by developing interconnected value chains capable of generating income and supporting sustainable economic activity.
The commission said the broader objective was to increase food production in the region, strengthen linkages between farmers and markets, promote agricultural processing and create more opportunities for people to participate in modern agriculture.
The Nomeh Unateze facility is expected to provide a practical model for how coordinated investments in farming, processing, training and market access can contribute to economic development across the South East.
