Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged Ndigbo to remain united and committed to peaceful coexistence and national development as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

The call was contained in an Independence Day message issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, by Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Global Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, who extended the organisation’s greetings to Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora as well as all Nigerians.

Chukwu said the anniversary offered an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on their shared history, common aspirations and collective responsibility for the peace, stability and development of the country.

He noted that Ndigbo had consistently demonstrated resilience, enterprise and commitment to the advancement of their communities and Nigeria as a whole.

According to him, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, had consistently encouraged Ndigbo to look beyond political, religious and strategic differences and focus on their shared responsibilities.

“We may disagree on politics, we may disagree on religion, we may disagree on strategy… but beneath these differences is a shared identity and a shared responsibility for our common good,” Mbata said.

Chukwu called on Ndigbo to draw strength from their unity, preserve their cultural heritage and work collectively with hope, wisdom and a strong sense of responsibility towards the country.

He said Ohanaeze remained committed to promoting a Nigeria founded on justice, equity, fairness and equal opportunity, where citizens could enjoy a genuine sense of belonging irrespective of their backgrounds.

“As an organisation committed to the unity and progress of our people and our nation, we shall continue to strive for a Nigeria where justice, equity, fairness and equal opportunity are not merely ideals, but enduring principles that guide our national life,” he said.

The group also urged Ndigbo to sustain their commitment to peaceful coexistence, national development and the creation of a future where every Nigerian could live with dignity, opportunity and hope.

Ohanaeze further wished Ndigbo and Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary.
