Six opposition political parties have held consultations with five presidential candidates as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and develop a coordinated strategy ahead of the 2027 general election.

The consultations, conducted at different times over the past two weeks, involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Salihu Lukman, speaking on behalf of the coalition parties, said the engagements involved Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.

According to the statement, the consultations followed resolutions adopted at the G100 opposition summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties.

The coalition said the meetings were intended to strengthen multiparty democracy, identify areas of common interest and advance Nigerians’ interests ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The consultations represent a practical step towards giving effect to those resolutions,” the statement reads.

“They provide an opportunity for party leaders and presidential candidates to deliberate on the framework for opposition cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider the steps necessary to advance a shared democratic agenda ahead of 2027.”

The coalition stressed the need for political leaders to work across party lines to address Nigeria’s challenges and protect the credibility of elections.

It added that Nigerians deserved leaders who would prioritise the country’s future and citizens’ welfare over narrow political interests.

The statement disclosed that the consultations were continuing, with further engagements expected to build on the G100 resolutions and strengthen cooperation among the opposition parties.

“Nigerians will be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progress,” it added.

The consultations come amid growing calls for opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In August, PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed called for opposition unity to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from power through the 2027 elections.

Baba-Ahmed made the call at an opposition political parties’ summit organised by G100 in Abuja, where he described defeating Tinubu as imperative and said it would require the support of Nigerians.
