The Chief Medical Director of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Prof. Bertrand Ngwu, has credited Governor Peter Mbah’s investments in the health sector with driving a major transformation of the institution, positioning it as an emerging centre of excellence in healthcare delivery and specialist medical training.
Ngwu made this known on Thursday during a visit to the hospital by the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
He said the governor’s intervention had facilitated the construction and completion of a modern emergency centre equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, significantly strengthening the hospital’s capacity to respond to emergencies.
The CMD listed other projects being undertaken at the hospital to include a six-storey building, an additional structure for administrative offices and wards, and a two-storey triage building. He added that the hospital had also received ultramodern ambulances to improve emergency medical services.
Beyond infrastructure, Ngwu highlighted the state government’s investment in staff welfare and professional development, disclosing that some members of staff had been sponsored abroad for further studies, while others were undergoing advanced training in Nigerian institutions.
He expressed optimism that the scale of investment and ongoing development would make ESUT Teaching Hospital a reference point for quality healthcare delivery and medical management in Nigeria.
The CMD further disclosed that the hospital had secured accreditation to train specialist doctors in neurosurgery, plastic surgery, urology and general surgery. It had also obtained accreditation for postgraduate training in accident and emergency medicine, a development expected to strengthen specialist medical education in the South-East.
Ngwu also revealed that the hospital had secured hosting rights for postgraduate examinations of the West African College of Surgeons, which are conducted twice yearly. He said the arrangement would save medical practitioners in Enugu and neighbouring states the cost and inconvenience of travelling to Lagos, Ibadan and Abuja to sit for the examinations.
He listed the hospital’s advanced diagnostic equipment to include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), X-ray and mammography machines, while disclosing that six departments had received approval to commence internship training.
The CMD urged the media to publicise the developments, stressing that the transformation of the hospital extended beyond physical infrastructure to specialist training, improved emergency response and better healthcare delivery.
In her remarks, Senator Tinubu, through her representative, Sulaiman-Ibrahim, called on women in Enugu State to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing its investments in healthcare, education and social development.
She also commended the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative and urged Nigerians to sustain the administration’s policies and programmes.
