A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a suit instituted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, seeking an order restraining the Senate from summoning him to appear before the red chamber.

Idris had instituted the suit seeking the court to restrain the Senate, the Senate President, and their agents from compelling him to appear before the Senate in person. He averred that the content of the Senate’s summons was ambiguous and confusing, adding that the letter addressed to him from the Senate shows the upper chamber’s readiness to interfere with the criminal investigation of one its members, Sen. Dino Melaye.

The Senate President, in a counter-affidavit, said the IGP was only attempting to use the court to avoid honouring invitation by instituting the suit.

Delivering judgment yesterday, Justice John Tsoho, held that the suit was an abuse of court process. He held that the court did not see any harm that could have been caused to Idris if he appeared before the Senate himself.

Meanwhile, the judge had also declined to entertain another suit filed by the IGP challenging the Senate for declaring him unfit to hold public office. He said the case file would be returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for re-assignment.
