One person has been reportedly injured as suspected cultists clashed along Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State.

The clash a witness told Journalist101 happened in the afternoon and led to a shooting which made people scamper for safety even at the nearby Garriki Market.

“There was was shooting along this Agbani road and all of us inside the market started running thinking that the dreaded unknown gunmen have invaded the market,” the witness said.

Continuing, the witness who sells foodstuff in the market said: “Some people said their items were stolen by the people we later discovered were cultists and one person was shot but the police arrived at the scene and rushed him to the hospital, I don’t think he’s dead as he was still breathing when he was taken to the hospital.”

Another witness said it was purely a cult activity and the people that shot the man (who’s also a cultist) trailed him to this area and shot him.

When asked if some people were robbed by the alleged cultists, he said he wouldn’t know about that as he was running for his dear life.

When contacted, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, Enugu Police Command spokesperson said that contrary to the report in some online news platform, their was no gunshot in any market in Enugu.

He also confirmed that one person was shot but said the personnel of the command from Awkunanaw Division arrived the scene early and rushed him to the hospital where he’s responding to treatment.

“Following a distress call received at Awkunanaw Police Division today, 03/06/2021 at about 1300hrs, alleging that a young man was shot by suspected cultists, along Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market, Awkunanaw Enugu; Police Operatives swiftly moved to the scene, secured and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he is responding treatment.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, psc, has ordered Anti-Cultism Unit of the Command to conduct discreet investigation to fish out and bring the assailants to book,” Ndukwe said in a short message sent to our correspondent.
