Major markets and motor parks in Enugu metropolis were on Thursday forced to shut down following the rally by the people Enugu East Senatorial District (Nkanu land) to help the zone demand for the Gubernatorial seat of the state in 2023 general election.

Some of the markets affected include: Ogbete, Kenyatta, Abakpa, Mayor, Gariki, New Market, Old Artisan markets. Also all the major public parks within the State capital were shut down.

The rally, tagged: ‘Enugu East Senatorial District Rally 2021’, was held at the popular Michael Okpara Square, Enugu and all the political office holders from the local government that made up the zone were in attendance.

Some of the traders that spoke to our correspondent expressed dissatisfaction with the order saying that their means of livelihood shouldn’t be shutdown because of a political event that doesn’t concern them.

“How can they force us to shut down our shops?, one of the shop owners said. Speaking further he maintained that “we don’t have any business with the event at Okpara Square and it shouldn’t be made to close shop.”

Another aggrieved shop owner said angrily “are we all from Nkanu? This action of our leaders is uncalled for and we’re not happy about it.”

Journalist101 gathered that transporters exploited the opportunity to hike their fares as major of the public parks were shut down.

Our correspondent who was at the event reported that the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Southeast and former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani and a former governor of the state, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani were absent for the rally.

Speaker after speaker at the rally which was across party line, all pleaded with the Governor, Rt Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi , to support the zoning of the party’s ticket to their zone.

Enugu East Senatorial zone is made up of Enugu North, Enugu South, Enugu East, Isiuzo, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government area.
