The Nigerian Government has reacted to the reported coup which toppled President Alpha Condé.

In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, it condemned the coup d’etat saying that it violates ECOWAS protocol on democracy.

The terse statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Esther Sunsuwa read: “The Nigerian Government is saddened by the apparent coup d’état that has taken place in the Republic of Guinea today, in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“The Government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind this coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect all lives and property.”

The 83-year-old Condé when he was elected in 2010 after decades as an opposition candidate, became the first freely elected president in the country’s history.

In July 2011, he survived an assassination scare after the presidential residence was shelled, resulting in the death of a presidential guard and the injuries of two others.
