The South-East Caucus in the Senate has echoed the growing calls for more comprehensive consultations regarding the Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

The caucus revealed its position on Monday following a closed-door meeting of senators from the five South-East states, convened in the office of their leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South).

After the meeting, Abaribe spoke to journalists, clarifying that while the caucus supports the objectives of the proposed tax reforms, it believes that extensive engagement with stakeholders is crucial before the bills are fully deliberated in both chambers.

“As senators representing the South-East, we do not oppose the Tax Reform Bills. However, we insist on broader consultations with our constituents across the 15 senatorial districts, state governments, and other key stakeholders within our region,” he stated.

He continued, “We have examined the bills and deem it essential to share our insights with stakeholders in the South-East to ensure that the final framework promotes fairness and addresses regional concerns. Consultation is critical for fostering inclusiveness and crafting effective legislation.”

The Tax Reform Bills currently under discussion include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill 2024, the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill 2024, and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024.

Since their submission by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, these bills have generated considerable debate.

While the Presidency and the South-South Senate Caucus have pushed for a swift passage of the bills, other groups, such as the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Northern Senators, and the Arewa Consultative Forum, have stressed the importance of broader consultations.

Abaribe assured that the South-East Caucus would maintain its engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the tax reforms are inclusive, equitable, and advantageous for all regions of the country.

“Specifically, we must consult with our constituents across all 15 senatorial districts in the zone, as well as with our state governments and other pivotal stakeholders,” he added.
