Nine people were killed in a deadly bomb explosion at a local bus stop in Mairari village, located in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. The blast, which occurred around 11 a.m. on Saturday, was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by Boko Haram terrorists.

The explosion left several others injured, with victims currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri.

According to a report by Punch Newspaper, the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, confirmed the attack and described it as a targeted act of terror against innocent civilians.

“It is unfortunate that nine of my resilient constituents were killed by planted IEDs while waiting to board vehicles at a local bus stop in Mairari village,” Lawan said.

“May Allah grant their souls Aljanatul Firdaus. I also pray for the swift recovery of those currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri.”

Lawan expressed concern over the persistent attacks in northeastern Nigeria, lamenting that Mairari village, which had previously been resettled twice under full civil authority, has once again been deserted due to renewed activities by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

He explained that despite displacement, many residents from Mairari, now taking refuge in Monguno, Guzamala, and Maiduguri, often return to the village for farming activities. This, he said, makes them vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

“Unfortunately, terrorists monitoring their movements planted IEDs at the local bus stop, which exploded while they were waiting to board commercial vehicles back to their destinations,” he narrated.

Lawan extended condolences to the bereaved families and injured victims. He further called on the Nigerian military and security agencies to intensify efforts in reclaiming key communities under terrorist occupation, especially Gudumbali, the local government headquarters, and Mairari village.

“These communities have long remained under the control of Boko Haram without any civil authority,” he stated.

The speaker stressed the urgency of restoring peace and civil administration in the region to prevent future attacks and secure the lives of returning internally displaced persons (IDPs).
