Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦20 million to victims of the recent devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State.
Obi, who made the donation during a visit to the state capital Minna on Monday, was received by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Yakubu Garba, on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.
Expressing deep sympathy, Obi said, “I am here to commiserate with the government and people of Niger over this unfortunate incident.” He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and for God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the flash flood has so far claimed about 153 lives, leaving behind extensive property damage running into millions of naira.
Obi also revealed his intention to personally visit Mokwa at a later date to meet with the victims and offer support during their time of grief.
In response, Deputy Governor Garba thanked Obi for his compassion and generosity. “We appreciate your show of kindness and love for humanity, especially in support of the victims,” he said while receiving the donation on behalf of the state government and the affected communities.
