The Awkunanaw Enlightenment Foundation (Awkulite), under the leadership of its National President, Bro. Amechi O. Ugwu, has awarded bursaries to 32 indigent but academically gifted secondary school students from the Awkunanaw clan. The event, held on Sunday, June 1, 2025, marks a major step in the Foundation’s mission to empower youth through education.

The beneficiaries were selected from the eight traditional communities that make up the Awkunanaw clan—Akegbe, Akwuke, Amechi, Amodu, Obeagu, Obuoffia; Ugwuaji, and Umueze with four students emerging from each community.

The selection process was rigorous, based on academic performance, financial need, and overall potential, and was overseen by the Foundation’s Education Committee led by Engr. Dr. Patrick C. Nnaji.

Speaking at the presentation, Bro. Amechi Ugwu described the initiative as a critical investment in the future of Awkunanaw.

“We are committed to empowering our youth and breaking the cycle of poverty through education. These bursaries are not just financial support—they are seeds of hope and change for our communities,” he said.

The Foundation emphasized that its scholarship and bursary programs are part of a broader strategy to close educational gaps and unlock opportunities for personal and economic advancement.

“Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives. By supporting students with great potential, we’re also fostering future leaders and driving the long-term development of Awkunanaw,” noted General Secretary, Surv. Geoffrey Ndubuisi Agbo.

The Awkunanaw Enlightenment Foundation currently runs both university-level scholarships and secondary school bursaries, targeting high-performing students from low-income backgrounds.

As the impact of the bursary awards resonates throughout the clan, the Foundation is appealing for sponsorship support to sustain and expand the program.

“We invite individuals, institutions, and organizations to partner with us. Education is a collective responsibility. By contributing financially or through mentorship, donations of materials, or collaboration on projects, you can help shape the future of our youths,” Bro. Ugwu urged.

The Foundation assured all prospective sponsors of transparency and accountability in the management of funds and resources. Support can come in various forms including:

  • Financial donations
  • Provision of educational materials and resources
  • Mentorship and internship opportunities
  • Institutional or organizational partnerships

In a passionate call to action, Surv. Geoffrey Agbo emphasized the importance of community collaboration.

“We urge all well-meaning individuals and organizations, within and beyond Awkunanaw, to join us in this mission. Together, we can provide educational opportunities and build a better future for our people,” he said.
