The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has issued a public advisory encouraging vehicle owners to bolster their vehicle security, following the recovery of 15 stolen, snatched, or abandoned vehicles by operatives in May 2025.
In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the CP advised motorists to register their vehicles with the Nigeria Police Force’s electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) platform.
He described the e-CMR as a critical national database designed to facilitate real-time identification and recovery of stolen vehicles across the country.
“The e-CMR platform plays a vital role in helping the Police identify stolen vehicles quickly and verify ownership in real-time. It supports effective policing and helps us respond better to car thefts,” CP Giwa stated.
To further prevent theft, the Commissioner urged the public to install security enhancements such as Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) tracking systems, alarms, and mechanical anti-theft devices like steering and pedal locks. He emphasized that such tools not only deter thieves but also aid police efforts in recovering stolen vehicles and apprehending culprits.
“While we remain committed to proactive policing and crime reduction, car owners must also take personal responsibility by staying alert and securing their vehicles, especially when parked,” he added.
Highlighting police efforts, the statement noted that on May 25, operatives from the Trans-Ekulu Division recovered a stolen Toyota Camry along the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway. The car had been stolen the night before from Ugbene 2, Trans-Ekulu.
According to the Command, sustained investigations and surveillance led to its recovery after the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. A manhunt is underway to arrest those responsible.
Residents of Enugu State are encouraged to register their vehicles on the e-CMR platform at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng and adopt preventive security measures.
The Command also wished the public a safe and secure month of June.
