Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has urged residents and customers across Enugu State to remain vigilant and help safeguard electricity infrastructure in their communities, following the recent arrest of a suspected vandal in Nsukka.
The company’s Head of Communication, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, stressing the need for greater community participation in protecting power installations against vandalism.
According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Jeremiah Daniel, was apprehended by the Isiuja Vigilante Group in Nsukka while in possession of 500mm intermediate cables, earth wires, and copper wires suspected to belong to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited.
Ezeh commended the vigilance and swift action of the community security outfit, describing the arrest as evidence that stakeholder collaboration is beginning to yield positive results in the fight against electricity infrastructure vandalism.
“There is no way we can protect these electricity infrastructures across our network without the support and collaboration of our stakeholders,” Ezeh said.
He expressed concern over the growing trend of vandalism, noting that it severely hampers MEDL’s operations and affects the quality and stability of power supply to customers.
“The company spends millions of naira replacing vandalized equipment, and this is no longer sustainable,” he added.
Ezeh also urged other communities within Enugu State to emulate the proactive efforts of the Isiuja Vigilante Group by taking ownership of the facilities that serve them.
He confirmed that the suspect and the recovered materials have been handed over to the Police at Nsukka Urban Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
