The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the foiling of an attempted armed attack on Ezinifite Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area during the early hours of Monday, October 27, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the swift response of a combined security team comprising Police operatives and Agunechamba Vigilante personnel prevented what could have been a deadly assault on the community.
“The joint security team engaged the assailants in a gunfire exchange, which led to the neutralization of one of the attackers, while others escaped into nearby bushes with suspected bullet injuries,” the statement read.
The operatives recovered one pump-action gun and the body of the neutralized suspect from the scene.
Ikenga added that offensive and intelligence-led follow-up operations are ongoing in collaboration with Police tactical teams to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu (fwc, minps, PhD), commended the gallantry and vigilance displayed by both the Police and the Agunechamba Vigilante Group.
“The Command appreciates the bravery of our officers and the local security operatives. We remain fully committed to ensuring the safety of all communities, particularly as the November 8, 2025 governorship election draws near,” CP Orutugu stated.
The Police urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative by promptly reporting suspicious movements or persons to the nearest security formation.
