The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under “Tranche B” of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) programme — a national metering initiative introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to bridge the metering gap and eliminate estimated billing across Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to Ezeh, the Tranche B rollout targets unmetered customers on Service Band “A” feeders across the South-East region. A total of 13,335 customers, including those under EEDC’s subsidiary companies, are expected to benefit from this phase, which commenced on November 2, 2025, with the Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise.
Ezeh stressed that the initiative is completely free, as it is fully funded through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) established by NERC.
“These meters and their installation are free, and customers are cautioned against making any form of payment to the meter installers or succumbing to any form of inducement or extortion,” he said.
“This aligns with our organization’s commitment to improving service transparency and customer satisfaction.”
He explained that the current phase prioritizes customers connected to Band “A” feeders and urged beneficiaries to ensure their contact information is up to date by visiting the Customer Service Unit at their local EEDC offices.
“Our team will be reaching out to customers on this metering exercise using the information provided in their profile with the company,” Ezeh added.
The spokesman recalled that earlier in the year, EEDC successfully completed “Tranche A” of the MAF programme, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered. He assured that once all customers under Band “A” are covered, attention will shift to those in Band “B”, emphasizing that the company is committed to systematically closing the existing metering gap across its network.
Ezeh also appealed for patience from customers who may not be captured in the ongoing phase, noting that another metering initiative, the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DISREP), is set to commence soon.
He warned against meter bypass and energy theft, describing such acts as counterproductive to the company’s investment in service improvement and revenue protection.
“Customers should avoid engaging in meter bypass, energy theft, and other illegal activities, and should report anyone involved in such criminal acts,” he cautioned.
Ezeh encouraged customers to contact EEDC for inquiries through the Call Centre on 02084700100 or via WhatsApp on 0707 461 0095 and 0707 461 0088.
The Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), he explained, is a pooled fund contributed by all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide, managed under NERC’s supervision, and dedicated to procuring and distributing prepaid meters to customers free of charge.
