Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday held his first strategic meeting with the newly elected South-East chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu, a move seen as a strong indication of recognition for Professor Uche Akubue as the authentic chairman of the party in Enugu State amid lingering leadership disputes.

The meeting, which took place on April 21, 2026, brought together all the newly elected ADC chairmen from the South-East alongside the party’s National Vice Chairman for the zone, as part of efforts to strengthen internal party structures and consolidate regional political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Among those present was Professor Uche Akubue, the Enugu State Chairman-elect, alongside his counterparts from Imo, Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi states.

The development comes at a time when the ADC leadership in Enugu State has been embroiled in controversy, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s chairmanship.

Obi’s decision to meet specifically with the newly elected chairmen, including Professor Akubue, is being interpreted by party stakeholders as a clear signal of where his support lies.

According to a statement issued by the ADC Media Team and signed by Martins Chiedozie Ugwu, the meeting focused on strengthening party cohesion, promoting internal democracy, and aligning leadership priorities across the South-East.

“JUST IN: All ADC newly South East Chairmen-Elect, together with the National Vice-Chairman South East Zone, met with His Excellency, Peter Gregory Obi [Okwute Ndigbo] in Enugu today,” the statement read.

It added that the gathering was aimed at discussing issues affecting the political future of the South-East within the broader Nigerian project.

“The meeting was rich and an opportunity for all of us to meet and discuss issues that affect Ndigbo’ political endeavours in the Nigerian project,” the statement said.

The ADC described the engagement as a major success and a step toward building stronger regional cooperation within the party.

“It was a resounding success, to God be the glory!” the statement added.

The meeting is expected to further shape political conversations in Enugu ADC circles, particularly over the legitimacy of the state leadership and the party’s strategic positioning ahead of the next general elections.
