Members of the House of Representatives during plenary

Fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections swept through the House of Representatives on Tuesday as eight lawmakers formally defected from their parties during plenary in the Green Chamber.

The defections, widely seen as early moves ahead of party primaries for the 2027 polls, cut across major political parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Among those who dumped the PDP for the ruling APC were Abubakar Abdul Buba from Niger State and Ibrahim Mohammed Bunza from Kebbi State.

Also leaving the PDP was Sani Yakubu Noma of Kebbi State, who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In Osun State, two lawmakers — Mudashiru Alani and Olusoji Adetunji — both exited the PDP and joined the Accord Party.

Lagos lawmaker Thaddeus Attah also left the Labour Party (LP) for the ADC, adding to the growing movement toward opposition realignments ahead of 2027.

From the ruling APC, Bashir Usman Zubairu of Kaduna State defected to the ADC, while David Abel Fouh from Taraba State dumped the APC for the PDP.

The wave of defections reflects the intensifying political calculations already shaping the build-up to the 2027 elections, as lawmakers position themselves for party primaries, alliances, and re-election battles.

The development is expected to trigger fresh debates over party loyalty, internal democracy, and the growing influence of smaller parties such as the ADC and Accord Party in the next electoral cycle.
