The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State has elected a new set of executives to pilot its affairs for the next four years, with the party also announcing the expulsion of its former State Chairman, Casmir Uchenna Agbo, over alleged anti-party activities.

The new executives emerged through consensus and voice affirmation during the party’s State Congress held at Filbon Hotel, New Haven, Enugu, where members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those elected are Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera as State Chairman, Dr. Chibuzor Onyema as Secretary, Chukwuemeka Ephraim Ugwu as Deputy Chairman, Ochi Chimezie as Youth Leader, and Nwankwo Charity Chiyeaka as Woman Leader, alongside other officials.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected State Chairman, Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera, thanked party members for the confidence reposed in him, describing his emergence as a call to service at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political history.

He said the country urgently needs renewed vision, purposeful leadership, and a stronger commitment to justice, equality, and governance that prioritizes the people.

“Our party is founded on the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. Every Nigerian deserves access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” Chidera said.

He noted that the challenges confronting Enugu State and the nation, ranging from economic hardship to governance deficits, require collective action and strong leadership, insisting that the Labour Party remains well-positioned to drive meaningful change.

According to him, his administration will focus on strengthening party structures across all wards and local government areas, deepening engagement with members and stakeholders, and promoting policies that directly improve the lives of citizens.

He also pledged to uphold transparency and accountability in the administration of the party, assuring members that the new leadership would maintain high standards both internally and in public governance.

“We must work together to build a future where every citizen has access to opportunities and resources, and where our children can thrive,” he added.

Chidera further urged party faithful to remain committed, united, and mobilized, promising that the leadership would justify the trust reposed in them through impactful and responsible governance.

Speaking with journalists after the congress, the State Secretary, Dr. Chibuzor Onyema, expressed confidence that the Labour Party would record stronger electoral victories in 2027 than it did in the 2023 general elections.

He disclosed that the party is currently reorganizing and strengthening its internal structures with the goal of taking over the Lion Building and securing majority representation in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The congress marks a significant political realignment for the party in Enugu, as it positions itself for what leaders described as a more aggressive push for power in the next election cycle.
