The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following reports that popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died after an alleged battle with cancer.
Reports monitored on Tuesday indicated that the actor reportedly passed away at a hospital in Lagos after months of illness, although official confirmation from his family was still being awaited as of press time.
The news sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans, with several Nollywood stars taking to social media to mourn the actor widely known for his roles in romantic dramas and comedy films.
Reacting to the development, actress Funke Akindele shared an emotional tribute on her Instagram story.
“Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best,” she wrote.
“May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex.”
Also mourning the actor, Bolanle Ninalowo wrote briefly on his social media page: “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”
Another actor, Godwin Nnadiekwe, described the news as devastating.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo,” he stated.
“To think you already prepared your Will — It’s heartbreaking, I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
The actor’s prolonged absence from social media and public events had triggered concerns among fans in recent months. His last Instagram post was reportedly made on December 30, 2024.
Known for his charisma, fashion sense, and versatility on screen, Alexx Ekubo rose to prominence through several blockbuster Nollywood productions and remained one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.
