Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested two suspected drug dealers in separate intelligence-led operations in Nkanu East Local Government Area, recovering quantities of substances suspected to be Cannabis sativa and other illicit drugs.
The arrests, according to the police, were part of the command’s ongoing crackdown on criminal activities and illicit drug trafficking across the state.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives attached to the Surveillance Team of the Agbani Area Command carried out one of the operations on May 21 at about 6:25 a.m. following credible intelligence.
During the raid on a suspected black spot at Umuiba Nara in Nkanu East LGA, the operatives arrested a 35-year-old suspect identified as Ani James.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to engaging in the illicit buying and selling of ‘Loud,’ ‘Colos,’ and other variants of Cannabis sativa,” Ndukwe stated.
He added that several sachets and wraps containing the suspected illicit substances were recovered from the suspect during the operation.
The police spokesperson disclosed that in an earlier operation conducted on May 16 at about 7:30 a.m., operatives acting on actionable intelligence also arrested another suspect, Edeh Ikechukwu, aged 50, from Isigwe Ugbawka in Nkanu East LGA.
According to the command, large quantities of weeds suspected to be Cannabis sativa were recovered from him.
“The suspect confessed to being involved in the illicit drug trade for the past five years,” the statement added.
The command noted that investigations into both cases were ongoing and assured that the suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to combating crime and drug-related activities, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, said the police would continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations across the state.
“The Command remains resolute in sustaining intelligence-driven operations against criminal elements and illicit drug networks across the State,” the commissioner stated.
He also urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue supporting the police with credible and timely information capable of aiding security operations.
