The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what it described as the worsening security situation across the country, arguing that the administration has failed in its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.
The party’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call while speaking on ARISE Television’s flagship programme, The Morning Show, where he delivered a scathing assessment of the Tinubu administration’s handling of insecurity.
According to Baba-Ahmed, the escalating wave of violence, kidnappings and attacks across Nigeria has exposed what he described as the government’s inability to effectively tackle the nation’s security challenges.
“It’s clear President Tinubu has no handle on the escalating violence,” he said, adding that “every inch of Nigeria is now vulnerable to insecurity.”
The PRP chairman argued that in more established democracies, the scale of insecurity currently confronting Nigeria would have had serious political consequences for any sitting leader.
“In a civilised democracy, President Tinubu’s record on insecurity would have cost him his seat a long time ago. It’s not too late to say President Tinubu should go. If we project what he’s doing, how he’s performing between now and the election, we don’t need to wait, Nigerians will reject him,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
He maintained that the party’s demand for the President’s resignation was neither partisan nor confrontational, but a position informed by concern over the country’s deteriorating security environment.
“But do we need to wait until more school children, women and adults and the whole country is overrun by criminality? We took a very responsible and measured position in PRP by saying that President Tinubu should resign. There’s nothing wrong, partisan or confrontational in that statement,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed further contended that the constitutional duty of any government begins with securing citizens and protecting their means of livelihood, insisting that the current administration has fallen short in both areas.
“In a democratic setting, you elect a president to perform two basic tasks; one is to protect the citizens, the other one is to protect the means by which they earn a legitimate living. Now, President Tinubu has spectacularly failed to protect anybody; every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable except you are in the tiny circle in APC. Children, toddlers are being stolen,” he said.
Questioning the continued stay of the President in office amid the security crisis, Baba-Ahmed added: “What else do you say to a president who has failed? Sir, you can’t run this country, please step down. It’s not a partisan thing, it’s not a confrontational thing, it’s a responsible thing to do. We say this with all sense of responsibility, and President Tinubu should resign.”
The PRP chairman also expressed doubts that the National Assembly would take steps to compel the President to leave office, alleging that lawmakers had failed to provide the necessary oversight.
“The National Assembly isn’t likely to get him to resign because it got it all swallowed. So, Nigerians should say so and the PRP has taken the lead by saying exactly what needs to be said. We’re not safe under him and we’re likely to be more exposed to criminality between now and the elections,” he added.
The remarks come amid growing national concern over insecurity following a series of kidnappings and attacks in different parts of the country, with opposition voices increasingly calling for more decisive action from the Federal Government.
