The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, has urged residents of Enugu North Senatorial District to participate peacefully in Saturday’s by-election, warning against any form of electoral violence before, during, or after the exercise.
Nwoye made the appeal on Friday in Nsukka while speaking with journalists ahead of the June 20, 2026 senatorial bye-election, which will determine the successor to the late Senator Okey Ezea of the Labour Party, who died on November 18, 2025.
He called on voters across the six local government areas in the district to come out en masse and exercise their civic rights responsibly.
“It’s your civic right to vote candidates of your choice, but in doing that you should avoid all forms of violence so that the election will be peaceful, free and fair,” Nwoye said.
“Avoid all unlawful activities, vote candidates of your choice and stay until the votes in your polling unit are counted so that you will be satisfied that your vote counts,” he added.
The APC chieftain also cautioned political actors and supporters to respect electoral guidelines and avoid obstructing security agencies in the discharge of their duties.
“Candidates in the election should abide by rules of engagement and should not in any way obstruct security agencies from doing their duties of providing security and safety to everybody,” he said.
Nwoye expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, describing him as a man with “enviable track records,” and said he was optimistic of victory for the APC after extensive campaigning across the senatorial district.
“I, and my team from APC National Secretariat Abuja are in Nsukka to help in mobilising residents from house to house to ensure large turnout on Saturday,” he stated.
He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its preparations and commitment to conducting a credible poll, urging the commission to sustain its transparency.
“I commend INEC in Enugu State for its dedication and transparency since the date of the by-election in Enugu North Senatorial District was announced by INEC headquarters Abuja,” Nwoye said.
“I urge the commission to keep it up to ensure credible, peaceful, free and fair election on Saturday June 20 by-election,” he added.
The APC Deputy National Chairman further said the party has confidence in INEC’s ability to deliver a fair outcome and would accept the result of the election.
“APC will accept the outcome of Saturday’s by-election because the party has confidence in the capacity of INEC to conduct free and fair election,” he said.
