As discussions over the future traditional leadership of Okpanku community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State gather momentum, community stakeholders and residents have continued to spotlight the contributions and leadership credentials of businessman and philanthropist, Chief Damian Orji, describing him as a symbol of service, empowerment and peacebuilding.
Supporters of the community leader say his life story reflects resilience, sacrifice and an enduring commitment to the welfare of his people.
Born on May 11, 1974, to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Orji Chukwu Lawrence of Umu-Uviaji Clan in Amagu, Okpanku, Chief Orji’s journey to prominence began with personal sacrifice. Community members recalled that he set aside his own educational ambitions at a young age in order to support his family through apprenticeship training, a decision they said later became the foundation of his entrepreneurial success.
Following years of business training and experience in Imo State, Orji relocated to Abuja where he established himself in the oil and gas industry. He later founded Jesil Oil and Gas Limited in 2009 and Reynight Resources Limited in 2011, businesses credited with creating employment opportunities for many Nigerians.
Beyond his achievements in the private sector, residents say Chief Orji has distinguished himself through philanthropy and community development initiatives that have positively impacted countless lives.
“Service to people has always been part of who he is,” a community member said.
“Many young men and women have benefited from his support, while numerous families have received assistance during difficult times.”
According to community leaders, his interventions have ranged from educational sponsorships and mentorship programmes to job placements and support for widows, orphans and vulnerable families within and beyond Okpanku.
Chief Orji has also built a reputation as a committed community leader, having served in several strategic positions, including Chairman of the Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi Catholic Community at the Church of Annunciation Parish, Kubwa, Abuja, Chairman of Amagu Development Union Abuja Branch, and Chairman of Idejimba Age Grade, among other responsibilities.
Speaking on his vision for Okpanku should he emerge as the next Igwe of the community, Orji emphasized the need for unity, inclusive leadership, sustainable development and stronger peaceful coexistence among residents and neighbouring communities.
“True leadership is about service, justice, and putting people first. Our community can achieve more when everyone feels represented, respected, and carried along,” he said.
Residents and supporters noted that his leadership style has consistently promoted dialogue, reconciliation and collective progress, earning him widespread respect across various segments of the community.
They argued that while his business accomplishments are noteworthy, his greatest legacy remains his commitment to uplifting others and fostering harmony.
As conversations surrounding the traditional leadership of Okpanku continue, many supporters insist that Chief Damian Orji’s decades of community service, philanthropy and dedication to peace have positioned him as one of the leading figures shaping the community’s future.
According to them, it is this record of compassion, empowerment and selfless service that makes him a strong contender for the stool of the next Igwe of Okpanku.
