Adewale Adeniyi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, to allow him consolidate ongoing reforms in the agency.

The extension was announced on June 19, 2026, in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Adeniyi’s initial tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026, but has now been prolonged to February 2027.

The Presidency explained that the extension is aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the National Single Window project and guaranteeing an orderly leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Customs Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as the retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.

“President Tinubu has granted a final six-month tenure extension to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi,” the statement read.

It added that the extension will enable him to “consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.”

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks over the years.

He was appointed Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before his appointment as Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The Presidency said the extension reflects confidence in his leadership and ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the Customs Service and improving trade facilitation in Nigeria.

This is the second time the president is extending the tenure of the Cuatom’s boss.
