President Bola Tinubu has nominated the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina, for appointment as a non-career ambassador/high commissioner, expanding the list of his diplomatic nominees.

The nomination was formally transmitted to the Senate on Wednesday in a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In the correspondence, President Tinubu said the nomination was made in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and sought the Senate’s prompt confirmation of the academic.

“In accordance with the provisions of section 121, subsections 2, 3, and 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday-Fashina as non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate,” the letter reads.

The President also informed lawmakers that the nominee’s curriculum vitae had been forwarded alongside the request for consideration.

“Attached herewith is the nominee’s curriculum vitae.”

Appealing for swift legislative action, Tinubu urged the upper chamber to conclude the confirmation process without delay.

“Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept distinguished Senate President and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Following the presentation of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening and further legislative action.

He directed the committee to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the Senate within one week.

If confirmed, Fashina will become the 70th non-career ambassador/high commissioner nominated by President Tinubu, following the earlier nomination and confirmation of 69 ambassadors and high commissioners as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation across the world.
