The African Action Congress (AAC) candidate for the Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chioma Ifemeludike, has withdrawn from the 2027 senatorial race, citing personal convictions and recent developments she said reinforced her decision to step aside.

Ifemeludike, who also serves as the AAC Deputy National Chairperson (South-East), announced her withdrawal in a letter addressed to the party’s Acting National Chairperson. The letter was made available to journalists on Friday.

She had emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate through a consensus arrangement during the AAC primary election held in May.

In the letter, Ifemeludike formally requested the party’s National Working Committee to remove her name from all records and processes relating to the Anambra Central Senatorial District candidature.

“I hereby formally notify the National Working Committee and the leadership of the African Action Congress of my decision to withdraw my interest and aspiration to contest for the office of Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District under the platform of our great party in the 2027 General Elections.

“This decision has been taken after careful reflection and in accordance with my personal convictions, principles, and commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society,” she wrote.

Explaining the reasons behind her decision, the AAC chieftain said recent developments surrounding the case involving Baby Testimony and his physically challenged mother had strengthened her resolve to abandon the race.

“Furthermore, recent events have reinforced my decision. In my view, the role played by Doris Ogala Umezurike in matters relating to the case of Baby Testimony and his physically challenged mother has been deeply concerning.

“I believe that the circumstances surrounding the matter contributed to prolonged distress, public embarrassment, and continued suffering for the child’s mother, while raising serious questions about the pursuit of justice for the child.

“These concerns have significantly influenced my decision to step away from my senatorial aspiration and focus on advocating for accountability, justice, and the protection of vulnerable members of society,” she stated.

Ifemeludike urged the party to withdraw her name from all records, processes and considerations relating to the Anambra Central Senatorial District senatorial candidature.

Despite her withdrawal from the contest, she reaffirmed her commitment to the African Action Congress, pledging to continue supporting the party and its ideals.

“I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the leadership and members of the party for the opportunity and support extended to me throughout this process.

“I remain a loyal member of the African Action Congress and will continue to work tirelessly for the success of the party and the advancement of its ideals.

“Please accept my assurances of continued commitment to the vision, principles, and objectives of our great party,” Ifemeludike said.
