Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved ₦1 million each for 31 verified indigenes of the state who recently returned from South Africa, as part of efforts to provide immediate relief and support their reintegration into society.
The approval was contained in a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, 2026, by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
According to the statement, the ₦31 million intervention is an immediate support measure intended to help the returnees address their pressing needs while assuring them that the state government has not abandoned them.
The government said the beneficiaries are currently undergoing comprehensive profiling to determine their individual circumstances, socioeconomic conditions and specific needs.
The exercise, it explained, would enable the state to design sustainable reintegration and social protection interventions tailored to the circumstances of each returnee.
The intervention, according to the statement, reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting the dignity and welfare of vulnerable persons in Abia and ensuring that citizens facing difficult circumstances receive the support needed to recover and rebuild their lives.
The government further said the initiative was consistent with the administration’s broader policies aimed at improving the wellbeing of citizens and providing opportunities for vulnerable residents to regain stability and become productive members of society.
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to the beneficiaries, the statement said Abia remains home to all its sons and daughters, irrespective of their location or circumstances.
It assured the returnees that the government would continue to explore measures to support their recovery and reintegration.
The statement added that the administration remained committed to ensuring that every Abian has the opportunity to “recover, rebuild, and contribute meaningfully to society.”
