The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 6,240 suspects, recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition, and rescued 211 kidnapped and abducted victims in the 17 months since Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa assumed office.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, September 4, 2026, following a working visit to the Command by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, AIG Miller Gajere Dantawaye.
According to Ndukwe, CP Giwa presented the operational scorecard covering the period from March 11, 2025, when he assumed office, to September 4, 2026, while receiving the AIG at the Command.
The Commissioner said the 6,240 arrests comprised 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects, 188 murder suspects, 57 suspects for rape and defilement, 273 cultism suspects and 63 suspects for unlawful possession of firearms.
He added that 5,315 other suspects were arrested in connection with offences including stealing, breaking and vandalism.
Ndukwe stated that the firearms recovered during the period included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, alongside 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition.
The Commissioner also disclosed that 209 vehicular exhibits, comprising motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, were recovered during various operations.
According to the statement, Giwa attributed the Command’s achievements to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and collaboration with security agencies across state boundaries.
He highlighted the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and enhanced emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and the Command-and-Control Centre.
Giwa also solicited continued support from the police zone, particularly in manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare, to enable the Command to sustain and improve its security operations across the state.
Meanwhile, AIG Dantawaye charged officers and men of the Enugu State Police Command to uphold professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties.
Ndukwe said the AIG urged personnel to strictly adhere to Force regulations, respect citizens’ rights and remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities.
Dantawaye also called on the officers to sustain public confidence in the Police, while expressing his readiness to work with personnel of the Command to further strengthen security in Enugu State.
The engagement, held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess on Agbani Road, Enugu, was attended by officers and men of the Command across various ranks and formations.
