The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, whose surname, age and address are yet to be established.
The command disclosed this in a press release issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, and signed by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma.
According to the statement, Emmanuel, a resident of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by police operatives attached to Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30 p.m. on September 21, following information that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.
Preliminary investigation, according to the police, indicated that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on September 19 before wrapping her remains in nylon and concealing them inside the toilet of his apartment.
The police said the offensive odour from the decomposing body later attracted neighbours, who forced the apartment door open and apprehended the suspect before police operatives arrived at the scene.
The victim’s remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the command said efforts were ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, the police said Emmanuel confessed to the alleged crime, claiming that it followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
According to the police account, the suspect said he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death, before wrapping her remains and dumping them inside the toilet.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.
The police commissioner also directed that the suspect be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Giwa further cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution regarding people they visit or spend time with.
