The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged prominent northern politicians eyeing the 2027 presidency to abandon their aspirations and wait until 2031, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will have completed his second term.
Akume specifically advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to dismiss any intentions of moving into the presidential villa in 2027, asserting that if it is God’s will for him to become president, he could still win an election at the age of 90.
Speaking during a TVC political programme on Sunday, Akume reiterated that it is still the South’s turn to produce a president in 2027.
The SGF, a former governor of Benue State, expressed confidence that President Tinubu has not lost his popularity among Nigerians due to the tax reform bills and other strategic economic initiatives implemented in the past 17 months. He conveyed optimism that the president would lead Nigeria for eight years.
He defended the tax reform proposals as well-thought-out legislations that would benefit the nation once passed by the National Assembly.
“President Tinubu, as a southerner, deserves a second term,” Akume stated, insisting that those from the North who aspire to the presidency in 2027 should look beyond that year and wait until 2031.
“If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to be President of Nigeria, even at the age of 90, he can achieve that. However, he and other northern politicians eyeing the office should consider the possibility beyond 2027.”
Akume called on Nigerians to support the progression of the reform bills through the necessary legislative processes, stating, “They are well-planned for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.”
