The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025, as the official date for its National Convention, following resolutions reached at its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

In a communiqué presented by the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the NEC ratified the composition of key committees that will oversee the zoning of national offices and the planning of the convention.

According to the document, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State was named Chairman of the Zoning Committee, with Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State will chair the National Convention Committee, with Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun) and Peter Mbah (Enugu) serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary.

NEC also received the resolution of the South East Zonal Executive regarding the National Secretary position of the party and resolved to consider the matter at its next NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.

Beyond internal party affairs, the NEC issued a scathing critique of the state of the nation under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the situation as “melancholic” and “anti-people.”

“NEC expresses serious concern over the sorry and melancholic state of affairs of our Nation under the irredeemably exploitative insensitive and anti-people All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the communiqué read.

The PDP leadership condemned worsening insecurity in the country, citing rampant killings, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks that it blamed on what it called President Tinubu’s “apparent negligence and abdication of his Constitutional duty.”

It also decried economic hardship and rising poverty, linking it to what it described as “ill-advised and ill-implemented policies” including fuel price hikes, electricity tariff increases, and multiple taxes, which it says have crippled the productive sector and led to mass job losses.

“NEC also laments the worsening economic hardship and extreme poverty in the country occasioned by the ill-advised and ill-implemented policies of the Tinubu administration,” the statement said.

The party accused the APC government of corruption, policy inconsistency, and budget padding, adding that these issues have eroded investor confidence and worsened infrastructural decay.

NEC also warned against what it called a plot by the APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

“NEC stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-Party totalitarian state as evidenced in the desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties through open siege, threats and intimidation,” the communiqué stated.

Despite the dire national outlook, the PDP NEC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and declared the successful NEC meeting as a sign of the party’s unity and determination.

“NEC reassures Nigerians that the PDP remains strong, resilient, united and determined now, more than ever before in leading the charge to rescue our Nation from the vicious grip of the APC,” Damagum said.
