Former Minister of Environment under President Muhammadu Buhari, Mohammed Abdullahi, has formally resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi, who initially served as Minister of State for Science and Technology before being reassigned to the Environment Ministry, announced his resignation in a letter dated June 1, 2025.

The letter, which was addressed to the APC chairman in his Uke Ward, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was also copied to other relevant party officials.

In the letter, Abdullahi cited “personal reasons” for his decision to withdraw from the ruling party.

He expressed appreciation to the ward leadership for their support during his time in the party, noting their collective efforts in strengthening the APC in Nasarawa.

“I wish you and the party good luck,” the letter simply concluded.

Abdullahi had previously held key positions in Nasarawa State, including Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General during the tenure of Governor Abdullahi Adamu.

He was also appointed Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under former Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura, solidifying his influence in the state’s political landscape.

Sources close to the former minister revealed that he is considering a run for governor in the 2027 elections.

However, uncertainty over securing the APC governorship ticket is said to have influenced his decision to exit the party.

Speculation is rife that Abdullahi may defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he could face stiff competition from David Umbugadu, the PDP’s 2023 governorship flag bearer, who still wields considerable influence within the party structure.

Others believe he may be exploring alignment with a proposed political coalition as a strategic platform to realise his ambition.
