Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Former Abia State governor and senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has rejected claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would suffer an early defeat in the 2027 general elections, describing such projections as unfounded and politically motivated.

In a response on April 15, 2026, Kalu criticised remarks by Saidu Bello Said, a former publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress in Kano, who had predicted that Tinubu would lose the election “before 10:00 am.”

Kalu said the assertion was “exaggerated, inflammatory, and lacking credible political grounding,” arguing that it ignores the realities of governance and the complexities of ongoing reforms.

He stressed that the administration’s economic policies, including fuel subsidy removal and fiscal restructuring, are designed for long-term stability rather than immediate political gains.

“Governance—especially in a country as complex as Nigeria—requires difficult but necessary decisions,” Kalu noted, adding that such reforms may cause temporary hardship but are essential for sustainable growth.

The senator maintained that electoral outcomes are shaped by broader factors beyond short-term economic discomfort, including infrastructure development, security, and institutional reforms.

According to him, Tinubu’s leadership credentials and experience in coalition-building place him in a strong position ahead of the 2027 polls.

Kalu also dismissed Said’s comments as politically driven, suggesting they were tied to internal repositioning within the ADC.

Analysts, he noted, view such statements as attempts to energise party supporters rather than provide objective electoral forecasts.

On criticisms surrounding rising fuel prices, Kalu argued that global market forces and fiscal realities made the policy direction inevitable.

He warned against oversimplified economic comparisons, saying they fail to account for subsidy burdens and exchange rate pressures.

Kalu further condemned remarks suggesting moral consequences for voters’ choices, describing them as divisive and contrary to democratic principles.

“Democratic processes rely on informed choice, not emotional declarations,” he said.

He concluded that Tinubu’s chances in 2027 would ultimately depend on measurable outcomes of his policies, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would yield tangible benefits for Nigerians ahead of the elections.
