The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline, enhancing oversight, and improving operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The development was announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid.
According to the statement, the restructuring is intended to refocus the Unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a stronger internal accountability mechanism within the Force.
The reform also introduces a streamlined operational framework designed to support proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments nationwide.
“The restructuring is necessitated by the need to refocus the Unit on its core mandate, address identified operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a credible and effective internal accountability mechanism within the Force,” the statement read.
As part of the reorganisation, the Inspector-General approved a leadership change, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as Head of the restructured Police Monitoring Unit.
Before his appointment, DCP Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Rivers State Commands, where he was involved in several high-profile investigations.
He was also noted for working closely with state authorities to modernise investigative processes and improve operational effectiveness. According to the Force, he is widely regarded by colleagues and stakeholders as a professional and community-oriented officer with a strong commitment to transparency and engagement in policing.
The Inspector-General of Police said the reform aligns with his broader vision of entrenching professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the Force.
“The Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels,” IGP Disu stated.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the development of a more transparent, professional, and citizen-focused policing system.
