Tension erupted at a political gathering in Obingwa, Abia State, on Thursday after youths openly booed Munachim Alozie over what they described as poor representation at the National Assembly.
The lawmaker, who represents Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency under the Labour Party, was interrupted repeatedly while attempting to address constituents at the event.
Eyewitnesses said the atmosphere became tense when Alozie picked up the microphone to speak, as several youths began chanting in Igbo, accusing him of failing to make meaningful impact in the constituency.
“Dede lotuo, igaghi aga ozo, nke igara aga, adighi ihe anyi huru,” the youths repeatedly shouted, loosely translated as: “Senior, please step down, you won’t return again, we have not seen any impact from your current tenure.”
Despite efforts by the federal lawmaker to outline some of his achievements and calm the crowd, the protesters reportedly continued with the chants, drowning parts of his speech.
The incident, which attracted reactions from supporters and political observers, briefly disrupted proceedings before order was restored.
Reacting to the development, a member of the lawmaker’s support group, Kenneth Nzube, condemned the conduct of the youths, describing it as provocative and capable of triggering violence.
“The behavior of the youths was provocative and could have sparked off violence, but I am happy that Honourable Alozie maintained his usual peaceful character,” Nzube stated.
The incident comes amid growing political activities and early permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections in the state.
