Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Senatorial primary, delivering a crushing defeat to incumbent Senator Ned Nwoko in a landslide contest across the district.
Results from the primary election showed that Okowa polled a massive 113,309 votes, far ahead of Nwoko, who secured 2,612 votes, while Mariam Ali garnered 40 votes.
The primary, conducted under the APC’s direct primary system using Option A4, took place across wards in the eight local government areas that make up the Delta North Senatorial District.
Party members turned out in large numbers for the exercise, which stakeholders reportedly described as peaceful, transparent, and credible.
Declaring the result, the returning officer, Eugene Odo, announced:
“Having satisfied all the requirements of the party and having secured the highest number of valid votes cast in the primary, Ifeanyi Okowa is hereby declared the winner of the Delta North Senatorial District primary election.”
The outcome marks a major political comeback for Okowa and a significant setback for Nwoko, whose re-election bid suffered a dramatic collapse at the primary stage.
Meanwhile, in the Delta South Senatorial District, incumbent Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas was reportedly leading in six of the eight local government areas as collation continued.
As of the time this report was filed, results from six councils had been received, with two still being awaited, while Joel-Onowakpo Thomas maintained a clear lead.
